I am a Regional Executive Officer for YMCA England working with the 15 YMCAs in the Midlands and Milton Keynes.  In 2006-7, I also had interim responsibility for 24 YMCAs in the Metropolitan region (London, Essex, Herts & Oxon).

Jim JenkinsonThe main focus of my role is to provide support, representation and development opportunities to the YMCAs in the Midlands Region.  My current priorities are:

  • Raise the profile of the YMCA in the Region
  • Promote the adoption of Insync Standards
  • Assist YMCAs to maintain and develop their Christian ethos
  • Help to strengthen the governance of YMCAs, particularly by involving more young people.

I am from the East Midlands, born in Lincolnshire and gained a degree in European Studies at Nottingham Trent University.  I now live in South Derbyshire with my wife and two boys.

I began my involvement in the YMCA in 1993 when I moved to Cheltenham.  I joined Cheltenham YMCA, as a member of the gym and squash.  In 1995 I started to volunteer at the youth club volunteer.  Two years later I was appointed Assistant Chief Executive (Programme).  I moved to Rotherham in 2000 to help re-establish the YMCA there, as its first Chief Executive for over 20 years.

I have experience of working locally, regionally, nationally and internationally with the YMCA.  I have a Certificate in Management Studies and have just completed 4 years in my current role, so I have an up to date and growing knowledge of the Midlands.

I am particularly passionate about helping to achieve greater involvement of young people in governance structures and making young people aware of the benefit of international experiences, specifically within the World-wide YMCA Movement.  Helping YMCAs to confidently articulate their Christian identity is paramount to me.

I worked in the travel industry before my YMCA employment.  I speak French and have lived and worked in France and Switzerland.  I am committed to and enjoy working with others.  Finally, I think I can also bring a sense of humour and a calm approach – which can prove helpful at times!
